IAM athletic trainer, Gary Smith, MEd, ATC, was selected the 2009 recipient of the Fred Zamberletti Award by the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame, Minnesota Chapter, www.nffmn.org. Gary was honored at the annual awards dinner, "Honoring Legends, Inspiring Leaders", on Sunday, April 19. Legendary Coach John Gagliardi, St. John's University, and College Football Hall of Famer, Randall McDaniel, headlined the event. WCCO-TV news personality Frank Vascellaro served as Master of Ceremonies.
The Fred Zamberletti award honors an outstanding Minnesotan practicing athletic training. Gary has served as the head athletic trainer for the U.S.A. hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. He was inducted into the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame in 2002 and the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003. Smith continues his work at the Institute for Athletic Medicine - Eden Prairie and at Eden Prairie High School.
